The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department July 20 – Aug. 3, 2026
July 20
Speeding with marijuana possession
Officer Holloway was stationary on Gray Hwy. when he observed a vehicle approaching Greene Settlement Rd. at a high rate of speed. Holloway checked his radar, and it showed the vehicle was traveling at a confirmed 72 MPH. The officer activated his emergency blue lights and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. Holloway made contact with the male driver and asked for his driver’s license.
The male driver advised the officer that he did not have his license on person but showed Holloway a picture of his license from his cell phone. While speaking with the male driver, Holloway smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. At that time, the officer had the male driver exit the vehicle and asked the male if he had smoked marijuana and if there was any marijuana inside the vehicle. The male advised that there was a pack of marijuana inside the vehicle. Holloway advised the male driver due to the odor, he was going to conduct a probable cause search of the vehicle. While searching the vehicle, the officer located a Taurus .9mm handgun, a .22 handgun and a nylon bag containing six sealed bags of suspected marijuana and three open bags of suspected marijuana. All the items were found in the center console of the vehicle.
The male driver was placed in custody at that time, searched and placed in Holloway’s patrol vehicle, then transported to the Jones County LEC. The male driver was issued citations for speeding 72/55, no license on person while driving, possession of marijuana less than one ounce and given a warning for safety belt violation.
July 21
Stuck on railroad tracks
Officer Joiner was at the railroad crossing on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd just after the intersection with Atlanta Rd. and observed a tractor trailer truck pulling an enclosed trailer with a FL tag that appeared to have got the trailer loading ramp stuck on the railroad tracks.
Joiner advised dispatch and asked to have Norfolk Southern in route to check for damage on the railroad tracks. During the conversation with the male driver and Joiner, the driver stated he did not have a delivery within the City of Gray. The next available wrecker service was called to assist in getting the tractor trailer off the railroad tracks. The wrecker service later ended up having to tow the tractor trailer as the drive shaft of vehicle was broken from the male driver trying to navigate off the tracks. Once the roadway was cleared, it was opened back up to the public and Norfolk Southern personnel arrived to assess the track conditions. The male driver was issued four citations on scene.
Two citations for no thru trucks/weight restrictions, one for impeding free flow of traffic, and one for failure to maintain lane. Note that there are signs displayed for No Thru Trucks before you enter the railroad crossing on MLK Jr. Blvd.
Aug. 3
Suspicious person
Dep. Hammond was dispatched to a location on Upper River Rd. for a suspicious person that was standing in a front yard spraying cars with a water hose and shooting an AR-15 up in the air as the cars drove by. Upon arrival, the deputy started looking for the suspect around the front yard and then moved to the side of the residence where there was a privacy fence. Another unit arrived on scene to assist, and just as the unit arrived, Hammond made contact with the male subject in the backyard sitting on a bench smoking a cigarette. The deputy advised the male subject to show his hands and asked him where the firearm was. The male subject stated there was no firearm then started to reach in his pocket and Hammond advised him not to. The backup unit detained the subject while Hammond searched for anyone else in the yard and the firearm, but nothing was found. The deputy then made contact with the male subject and asked for his name, date of birth and Operator License Number to check for warrants. Hammond found the male had no active or outstanding warrants in GA, so he advised the male subject to stay in the backyard or go inside for the remainder of the night.
The male complied.
