National Day of Prayer set today

Jones County will participate in the National Day of Prayer at Carol’s Park at 6:30 p.m., May 5, to pray for the nation.

Debra Hall, coordinator for the Jones County National Day of Prayer, said she is excited to pray along with others on that day. She said people can pray silently along with those who are designated to pray, and she suggests bringing a folding chair for comfort. She said if there is rain, they will conduct the event at First Baptist Church.

“The first call to prayer was in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the Colonies to pray for wisdom in forming our nation, and it’s continued down through history in different ways,” she said. “Every president has in some way declared a day of prayer for America. Harry Truman declared a National Day of Prayer and signed it into law in 1952.”

She said in 1988 Ronald Reagan signed into law designating the first

Thursday of May as the annual observation for the National Day of Prayer.

“The National Day of Prayer is so important for Jones County, because even with all our problems, we still live in the most blessed nation in the world. I believe because our nation is established on prayer is why we are so strong, and God is why our nation has survived all these years. He blesses us,” Hall said.

The coordinator said the National Day of Prayer is a holy time. She said they welcome people from all denominations. She said they are all part of the body of Christ, and the prayer is based on the word of God.

“If people are concerned about what is going on in our nation, people should come out to this,” she said. “There’s a lot that goes on, and I know some people can’t get out of the house, but if you can be there, please come. I would love to see families come together, church groups and social organizations. If we don’t take a stand now, I don’t know what hope is left for America.”

Hall said the areas of society that will be prayed for this year are family, church, business, education, military, the government, arts and entertainment, and the media. She said they will be praying that God is exalted in all those areas.

She said she wants people to leave the National Day of Prayer knowing they have done business in the courts of heaven. She said she wants people to know they will be making an eternal impact by showing up.

“This is like a huge family reunion. I can’t stress how important the National Day of Prayer is,” Hall said. “It’s time to get busy and share the love of Christ with people. Prayer does work. I hope people leave encouraged and inspired.”
