Members of The Jones County Friends of the Library are a group of unsung heroes who work tirelessly to raise money to support the Jones County Public Library and literacy.
The group’s most recent donation was in the amount of $6,000. It was presented at the Aug. 10 quarterly meeting of the Jones County Library Trustees. The check was accepted by Branch Manager Julie King and Board Chairman Debbie Lurie-Smith.
Friends of the Library President Sarah Hancock presented the check and spoke about the organization. She said all the books have been donated from people in Jones County.
“We have really enjoyed it. When we first started, we were lucky to make $100. We are so thrilled that every now and then we make $600,” she said. “We move a lot of books, but we sell them cheap.”
Hancock said the group has a lot of fun but works hard. She said the price of hardback books is $1, paperbacks are $0.50 and children’s books are five for $1.
Over the past seven years, the organization has given the library over $20,000.
The Friends of the Library Book Sale happens every second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The location of the sale is currently housed at the Jones County Pre-K complex in building E, which is located at 273 Railroad St. in Gray.
The Jones County Friends of the Library currently has eight members: Hancock, Lavon Smith, Vivian Kilgore, Laura Wells, Lavane Freeman, Becky Loth, Trish Ash and Sandy Albright.
Anyone interested in joining the organization can contact the library at 478-986-6626.
