The Jones County Public Library is ready for the spooky season this October and has a lot of activities planned this fall to keep the community reading and enjoying the facility.
Julie King, branch manager of the Jones County Public Library, said she excited about October and all of the fun things they have planned at the library. She said please check out their Facebook page for all of the upcoming activities.
“I think with the season change everyone starts getting in the mood for apple pies and pumpkins. You can even see that transition with the books people read, which is fun,” she said. “We love to hear how excited the kids are about this time of year at the library, and love to see people curling up with a good book here. People should come see all we’re doing here.”
She said the library has Teacher Tuesdays at 4 p.m., where a teacher from one of the Jones County schools reads a book at the library, and Wiggle Worms on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., for ages zero through five years. She said they do fun stuff like puppet shows, songs and read books. She said Thursdays they have family craft day at 4 p.m. for everyone.
The branch manager said she wants to remind the community of Friends of Library, who are having their monthly book sale at the Jones County Pre-K, Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. She said the Jones County Friends of Library is great, because they are very organized and the funds they have earned has helped the library a lot.
“We have art class here at 11 a.m. Oct. 15, and we have a sign-up sheet. This month we are doing stained glass, which is like a picture. It’s free, all the supplies are free, and we can usually accommodate around 20 people. The spots go fast,” the branch manager said.
King said the Jones County Public Library will be participating in the Not So Scary Grayberry Spectacular Oct.
22. She said they will be giving away books and Little Jo will be there designed as a haunted house.
“On Halloween, Oct. 31, we will have trick or treating here at the library. Everyone can wear their costumes here,” King said. “This will be going all day long. It will be a fun day full of Halloween magic, and we hope to see everyone here.”
The library has a new Facebook page, Jones County Library. She said the original Facebook was compromised, and the new page has upcoming activities and pictures of current events.
King suggested everyone follow the new page to keep up.
PLAY cards will finally be implemented Oct. 7, just in time for Fall break.
“All students have to do to access books is use their student number,” she said.
They will no longer need a library card. Students can check out five books, and there will be no fines or late fees.
The branch manager said the Jones County Library is full of activities this month, and they want to make the library a welcoming place for everyone. She said the library is no longer a place where people have to stay quiet, but a fun place for all.
“We’re trying to promote reading and literacy here. All the activities here are important, because we want people to love the library. We want to promote the love for reading, so we want the children to start coming young and grow here. We want to show people the library is a lot more than it used to be,” the branch manager said.
King said she feels like the Jones County Library is becoming a community center. She said there are lots of meetings in the facility, tutors accessing the library and the computers are used regularly. She said she wants to see even more of the community using the library and hopes people will come out this Halloween season for all of the fall and Halloween activities planned.
“We have a lot of fall and Halloween books out this October for people to check out. There are lots of great reads to choose from,” she said. “We are excited for this season, because we get to change up the library for Halloween and create a spooky vibe here. I can’t wait to see all of the kids’ costumes this Halloween.”
