Mattie Wells Elementary School recently held a Grandparent’s Day breakfast, welcoming grandparents back into the school after two years.
Ellen Tarleton, family and student events chairperson at Mattie Wells, said she was excited to have the grandparents back in the school and seeing all of the memories being made.
“This was the first Grandparent’s Day we had in several years due to COVID-19, so we had all of the grandparents back in the building,” she said. “The lunchroom served breakfast to the grandparents, and they just spent time with their grandchildren, so it was a wonderful time for them.”
She said it was important to have grandparents at Mattie Wells Elementary School, because it’s important to have family support all of the time. She said it was important for them to see where their grandchildren go to school and what they do in school.
“They loved being together. The grandparents were excited to just be back in the school, and some of them have never even been inside the school. The students were so excited to show them around and let them see their routine,” Tarleton said.
Chadon Baker, a secondgrade student at Mattie Wells, said he likes math and reading at Mattie Wells Elementary School. He said Grandparent’s Day was fun since he got to talk to his grandparents. He said showing them his classroom was his favorite part of the day.
“They do exploring and stuff.
I go to their house every Friday, and I enjoy doing that,” he said. “I showed them my computer in the class. They said that was neat, because they said all they had when they were in school was a typewriter.”
Tarleton said they will keep trying to do Grandparent’s Day each year at Mattie Wells Elementary School and have more family involvement. She said it’s important for people in general to see how the school is doing and see the education going on in the school.
“Just seeing the smiling faces of the grandparents was my favorite part of Grandparent’s Day. They were so excited, and the kids were so excited to see them, too. It was all just a big air of excitement that made me happy. The kids talked about it a lot,” the chairperson said.
Another second-grade student, Kolt Daffner, said he’s learning about a lot of awesome things in second grade, and his favorite subject is math. He said he hung out with his grandma on Grandparent’s Day, eating breakfast.
“I think grandparents should be liked and loved, because they are a part of your family,” Daffner said. “My grandma loves me, and at the house I get to play with Hot Wheels and stuff. My favorite thing about Grandparent’s Day was I got to hang out with my grandparents and have love spread around my whole body.”
