The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Nov. 25 – Dec. 1, 2022.
Nov. 25
Sgt. Carr was monitoring traffic on Hwy. 49 when he observed a truck pass in front of him that had very dark tinting on the windshield. Carr pulled out behind the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver advised Carr that he had purchased the truck out of Florida and was not aware of the GA tint law. While speaking with the driver, Carr noticed he was very nervous and would not make eye contact with him. The sergeant asked the driver for his license and the driver began randomly reaching around in the vehicle. Dispatch then advised Carr that the driver had active warrants out for his arrest. The driver was secured in handcuffs.
Deputy Morris arrived on scene to assist with the traffic stop. Morris had the female passenger in the vehicle exit and Carr retrieved K9 Rex to conduct a free air sniff on the truck. K9 Rex alerted to narcotics in the vehicle. Carr then began to search the vehicle and on the passenger side there was a bag located containing methamphetamine. The passenger was secured in handcuffs at this time. Carr advised the driver and passenger since the drugs were in reach of both subjects, they were both being arrested. Carr transported the driver to the Jones County LEC, and Morris transported the passenger to the Jones County LEC. Warrants were secured for both the driver and passenger for possession of methamphetamine. The driver was also issued a citation for window tint violation. Both were turned over to jail staff for booking.
Nov. 26
Sgt. Carr was conducting routine patrol on Griswoldville Road when he ran a GA tag through GCIC/ NCIC to check for valid insurance and registration. The in-car computer alerted Carr that the vehicle had no active insurance.
Carr conducted a traffic stop at that time. The driver advised Carr that the vehicle belonged to his son and his son advised him that the insurance was good, that is why he drove it. While speaking to the driver, Carr detected an odor of marijuana. At that time, Carr requested another unit to assist with the stop. Carr asked that the male passenger in the bed of the truck to step down and when the male did so, the sergeant continued to smell the odor of marijuana.
Deputy Robinson arrived on scene to assist. Carr retrieved K9 Rex and conducted a free air sniff of the vehicle. K9 Rex alerted to the odor of narcotics. Carr did a pat down search of the male passenger and pulled two clear bags of marijuana from his jacket pocket.
While conducting the search of the passenger, Carr noticed the subject’s hand clinched then the subject reached over and dropped something in the bed of the truck.
Carr found that it was a clear bag of methamphetamine that was dropped by the subject. The driver was released from the scene and the passenger was placed in handcuffs and transported to the Jones County LEC where a warrant was secured for possession of methamphetamine and a citation was issued for possession of marijuana less than one ounce. The subject was turned over to jail staff for booking.
Nov. 28
Inv. Hall was in the area of Griswoldville Road when he observed a vehicle traveling in front of him that was failing to maintain lane. Hall activated his blue lights to conduct a traffic stop at this time. The driver of the vehicle snatched the vehicle and made an immediate right turn. Hall activated his siren at this time; however, he noticed the vehicle speeding up not showing any signs of slowing down. Hall notified Jones County dispatch that he was attempting to pull a vehicle over and it was not stopping. As the vehicle attempted to make another wide turn, the driver lost control and was not able to gain control of the vehicle back. Hall observed what appeared to be a white male get out of the vehicle and start running into the woodline. Hall began chasing the subject while updating dispatch of the location and description of the male. Sgt.
Walker arrived on scene to assist. The vehicle was towed by a local wrecker service. The male subject was not located. The case is still under review.
