Football title games going back to “The Benz”

GHSA

State championship games are moving back indoors for high school football teams in Georgia.

Following four seasons of the state finals in each classification being staged at Georgia State’s Center Parc Stadium, formerly Turner Field, championships for football and girls flag football will be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium starting next year, an indoor setting well protected against the elements of cold and rain that are typically seen during December.

The three-year contract between the GHSA, Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the Atlanta Falcons was announced last Thursday, with next year’s games tentatively set for Tuesday through Thursday, a week and a half following the scheduled semifinals across all classifications.

The move takes the state title game back in the same venue that is home to the Atlanta Falcons and the SEC Championship, where state championships were held in 2017 and 2018, although some games in 2018 were postponed to teams’ home stadiums due to weather postponements.
