Crime Watch

The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Dec. 27, 2022 – Jan. 5, 2023.

Dec. 27

Officer Pointer was on patrol when he observed a vehicle approaching at a high rate of speed. The in-car radar unit in Pointer’s car showed the vehicle to be traveling 65 mph in a 45mph speed zone. Pointer turned around and conducted a traffic stop at that time. The officer made contact with the driver and checked his license through the GCIC database and learned that the driver had an active warrant out of Baldwin County.

The warrant was confirmed, and Pointer transported the driver to the Baldwin County line, and he was issued a citation for speeding 65 in a 45-mph zone, then turned over to a Baldwin County Deputy.

Dec. 29

Deputy Shurley was dispatched to a local business in reference to shoplifting, however the subject had already left the scene. When Shurley arrived, he met with one of the employees and they advised the deputy that a male had been seen walking around the store placing unknown objects into an 18-gallon Rubbermaid storage container that was sitting inside his buggy.

A review of the video footage also shows not only the male subject but also a female subject walking in the business together. The female subject is seen a short time later on the video footage standing in line at the register and actually purchased and pays for an item. Around the time the purchase was completed, another customer notified the store employees that the alarm was going off. The male is not seen in the business, nor is he seen exiting the front of the store at all. It was a high possibility the male exited out the rear door of the business. The couple were only in the business approximately 10 minutes and when the outside camera footage was reviewed, there was no evidence of a vehicle the couple would have occupied.

When the female subject went to leave the business, the outside camera malfunctioned and the next footage seen was the buggy they were using rolling into a nearby ditch. There was no way to identify the offenders at this time.

Dec. 30

Deputy Morris was patrolling the area of Highway 57 when she checked a GA license plate for valid registration. The plate reader advised Morris the vehicle had expired registration. Morris initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the male driver.

The driver asked the deputy if he was speeding, and Morris advised the subject his vehicle tag was showing the registration was expired. The driver advised Morris the vehicle belonged to his son, and he must have forgot to renew on his birthday he just had. Morris did a driver’s license inquiry on the driver, and it came back to show his license was suspended. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to the Jones County LEC where he was issued a ticket for driving with suspended license and a warning for expired registration and then he was handed over to jail staff for processing and release.

Deputy Harden was in his patrol car working radar when the unit alerted to a vehicle traveling 75 mph in a 55-mph speed zone. Harden performed a traffic stop on the vehicle.

The deputy made contact with the female driver and ran her GA driver’s license through the GCIC system, and it returned to show that the female had two active warrants out of Bibb County. The female driver was taken into custody per the request of Bibb County and then transported to the Bibb County LEC.
