Greyhounds show fight, even in closing seconds

Facing a seasoned GMC Prep team, the Greyhounds fell 6-1 last Tuesday to the visiting Bulldogs. But even in defeat, Greyhounds head coach Will Cowart was proud of one specific trait shown by his team.

“I’ll never have to worry about my guys not playing hard for 80 minutes, even if we play crazy good competition,” Cowart said. “That’s my favorite thing about these guys. They’ll play hard even to the final second.”

After keeping things scoreless through the first six minutes, a quick flurry of goals put the Bulldogs up 3-0. With the Greyhounds working through a new alignment, there’s an adjustment that may at times cause breakdowns in communication, Cowart says.

“We’re playing a new formation, and we’re working through it.

Individual mistakes are going to happen when you are working through something new,” Cowart said. “We’re doing something new. It’s a little more defensive and focused more off the counter.”

Even so, the Greyhounds didn’t roll over, and that included the play of Justin Flippen in goal, a shift that moved a usual position player to a position in net.

“He did a really admirable job back there. We definitely missed him on the field,” Cowart said.

“To only give up six to them, it’s not bad.”

That grit to the end paid off handsomely in the closing stages of the match, when a penalty kick from the left was perfectly angled into the net for a goal, sending Jones County home with an offensive marker and momentum going forward for upcoming matches against Ace Charter on Thursday and next Tuesday at home against Jackson.

The Greyhounds fell 5-0 Monday to Stratford.
