Mattie Wells students share
Mattie Wells Elementary School held a Valentines Dance Feb. 10, where students danced the night away.
Adrienne Bonds, the fifthgrade teacher in charge of the dance, said the students got to enjoy A Night in Paris at the Valentines Dance. She said it was a night for Mattie Wells Elementary School students to have fun, hang out with their friends and enjoy snacks while dancing.
“The Valentines Dance is an annual dance to support our fifth graders who are going to Washington D.C. this year,” she said. “All of the profits from the dance will be split between the students going to Washington D.C. We had a lot of parent support for the dance, and almost 500 guests attended.”
She said the dance was important, because since COVID-19 the students haven’t been able to have anything like the Valentines Dance. She said it was a way for the students to get back to some normalcy and to bond with parents in a social atmosphere.
“This dance was needed. This is all the students have been talking about, and they had a great time. The kids were so excited, since they hadn’t had anything like this since COVID shut everything down. They were overjoyed,” Bonds said.
Kira Hubble, a fifthgrade student who attended the dance, said everyone was dancing and having a good time. She said the gym was decorated beautifully, and she was excited when she went inside to see everything.
“I was excited to show my teachers my favorite dress,” the student said. “It was a wedding dress from my aunt’s wedding. I like how on Valentine’s Day you get to see your loved ones and get gifts.”
The teacher said the students have learned a lot about Valentine’s Day, love and thankfulness, so they would understand the feelings connected to Valentine’s Day and what it means. She said a lot of students wrote things for their parents and teachers centered around the day.
“I wanted the students to have fun at the dance. They work so hard at school, and just like adults need down time, they need down time. They love to dress up, and this was a great way for them to let loose. Seeing their smiles and happiness made my night,” the teacher said.
Axel Olson, a fourth-grade student who attended the dance, said this was his first dance, and he was excited to dress nice and dance. He said he was excited for ‘A Night in Paris,’ and he was getting impatient days before since he was ready to dance.
“This dance was important, because it allowed everyone to have a good time,” he said. “I really wanted to come to this dance so I could just dance. I think I’ll remember the Valentines Dance for a long time.”
