‘Better before our very eyes’

Greyhounds showing progress despite record

The results may not be tangible in the win/loss column, but Greyhounds head coach Will Cowart is still seeing signs of growth for Jones County, even in the face of defeat.

Last week against Ace Charter was a prime example.

In a 4-1 loss to the Gryphons, Jones County matched the opposition in the second half after trailing 3-0 after the first 40 minutes. It’s of note that Ace earlier this beat Northside 3-2, which beat Jones County 9-0.

“They’re getting better before our very eyes. That’s the best we have played all year, by far,” Cowart said. “Every game, we are getting better. To lose 4-1 against a team that beat a team that beat us way worse, we are getting better each time.”

Toughening up defensively, the Greyhounds held the Gryphons to one second-half goal. At the same time, JCHS found ways to put together some offensive sets and stay aggressive. That energy paid off into the match’s 64th minute overall, when Grayson Robbins powered a penalty kick into the back of the net to trim the Ace lead to 3-1 prior to one more goal being added for the 4-1 final score.

The Greyhounds host Peach County on Friday as they build toward the start of region play on March 3.

“We’re getting chances to score, we have had more,” Cowart said. “I’m very encouraged with where we are headed.”
