BOYS SOCCER
The Greyhounds continue to be encouraged by signs of progress heading toward Friday’s region opener at Locust Grove. The marked improvement of a young team taking on a new on-field strategy continued last week in a pair of 2-0 losses to Peach County and Jackson.
In Tuesday’s loss to Jackson, the match could have easily swung the opposite direction, with a scoreless tie being broken inside the final 30 minutes on a Red Devil goal set up by a corner kick where an apparent handball was not called and protested in vain by the Greyhound coaches.
“We fought tooth and nail. It was 0-0 almost the entire time,” Greyhounds head coach Will Cowart said. “We get better every game; every result has been better. We had a chance to win against a really good team with a cluster of talent.”
Jones County had a chance to net a late goal that was set up by a direct kick, but Jackson turned the try away, getting back downfield to beat Greyhounds goalie Justin Flippen for the score.
With Flippen in net recently, Jones County has showcased improvement on its own end of the end, having given up a combined four goals in its past two games.
“We’ve definitely figured something out defensively,” Cowart said. “Now, we’re trying to unlock things offensively.”
