Redmond pleads guilty to four counts of identity fraud

SUPERIOR COURT

A Savannah man entered guilty pleas in Jones County Superior Court for charges he received following a traffic accident in the City of Gray.

Jaylin Keondre Redmond was in court Feb. 27 to enter the pleas and received sentences of 10 years each for four counts of identity fraud. As the result of plea negotiations with the state, a charge of possession of marijuana, less than an ounce, was dismissed. All counts are to run concurrently for a total of 10 years, and the sentence may be served on probation.

Redmond was arrested March 7, 2022, and indicted on the charges by a Jones County Grand Jury June 28.

His arrest took place following a traffic accident at a busy Gray intersection, during which he was rear-ended.

A report of the March 7, 2022, accident and subsequent charges by Gray Police Officer Brad James states Redmond was stopped near the intersection of Washburn and West Clinton at approximately 2:30 p.m. when the Kia he was driving was struck in the rear by a 2003 Dodge.

James said, when he approached the Kia, he could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. He said Redmond stated that he had been rear-ended, and he was experiencing back pain. The accident report placed the driver of the Dodge at fault for the accident; however, the accident was only the beginning of the story.

James said Redmond told him he had smoked marijuana the day before and early that morning. He also said he had no marijuana in the vehicle. The officer said, while they were waiting for EMS to arrive, he started his search of the Kia.

James said he found the magazine of a handgun in the center console, but the driver said he did not own a handgun. The officer said during a further search of the vehicle, GPD Lt. Jacob Hunnicutt found a Glock 17 in the trunk.

James said Redmond later stated the gun belonged to a friend.

When EMS arrived at the scene, Redmond was searched by Hunnicutt. James said eight checks from various people, made out to different businesses, were found in the suspect’s pocket. Redmond told the officers he found the checks in a trash can in Macon.

GPD Capt. Eric Maynard, who was also at the scene, found a marijuana cigarette next to the vehicle, which Redmond said could have fallen out of his pocket.

A supplemental report by Hunnicutt stated the checks he found on Redmond were all from Dublin. He said he contacted the Dublin Police Department and found out the checks in Redmond’s pocket had been stolen. The lieutenant said he secured warrants for eight counts of receiving stolen property and put a trace on the firearm to find out if it was stolen.

According to the reports, Redmond’s possible charges were theft by taking stolen property for the checks and another count of theft by taking stolen property for the Glock 17/3 mags/48 rounds.
