Hounds show ‘competitive fight’ in loss to region foe

With a new face on goal due to the injury of Justin Flippen, the Greyhounds got the fast start they needed last Tuesday against Union Grove, netting an early 1-0 lead within the opening minutes on a goal by Greyson Robbins. The Wolverines would eventually wear down the Greyhounds, however, taking a 4-1 win.

“That was big time,” Greyhounds head coach Will Cowart said. “I told our guys that the first 10 minutes were going to be huge in terms of if this was going to be a competitive fight or not, and it was. The game was a competitive fight.”

Jones County got strong play on the back end even with Flippen out, and a good part of that had to do with the goalie play of backup Sam Delcid, who along efforts to clear scoring chances out prevented Union Grove from easily putting the game out of reach.

“Sam is coming along.

He’s learning how to be the guy and he’s going to have to be the guy,” Cowart said.

“He played a really, really good game.”

The Greyhounds fell 5-1 at Ola on Friday.

Despite the loss, last week led into a span of three games that began on Tuesday against Dutchtown, Warner Robins and Eagles Landing. With a win in two of those three contests, the Greyhounds (0-11, 0-3) will likely advance to the state tournament.

“Everyone in this region is seasoned and is pretty good,” Cowart said. “We’ll keep fighting, competing and keep getting better.”
