Canty signs with FAMU

Aniya Canty’s softball career at Jones County has been beyond what many could dream of. In four seasons, she has been part of three Elite 8 teams, a state champion and helped bring home a coveted region title.

But Canty’s softball career is hardly over. Rather, it’s taking another step as she signed a national letter-ofintent last week to play for Florida A&M.

“At first, I didn’t believe I was going to make it and play in college, and this kind of came along,” Canty said. “This was kind of a blessing from God. I’m very thankful.”

Canty, primarily a third baseman for the Lady Hounds, will go to a Rattlers program that finished the regular season third in the SWAC. FAMU’s schedule this past season included a tournament at Mercer.

But there has been more to Canty’s impact on the field. She was voted JCHS Homecoming Queen last fall, and as a show of her willingness to help others, she was helping umpire a recreational softball game hours after last Wednesday’s signing event.

“She’s done a great job on field and softball field. She’s well-rounded,” Lady Greyhounds Head Softball Coach Tripp Burt said. “When you think of a Jones County softball player, Aniya is who you think about. She’ll be severely missed by us. FAMU is getting a great one.”
