SUPERIOR COURT
A Macon man entered a guilty plea in Jones County Superior Court for a crime committed in 2021 following an attempted traffic stop.
Carlton Lewis Alexander received a total of three years to serve for the charges of felony fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, possession of methamphetamine and giving false information to a law enforcement officer.
The defendant was indicted on the charges by a Jones County Grand Jury April 11.
Alexander entered his plea July 20 via Zoom from Smith State Prison, where he is serving a 20-year sentence for the charge of aggravated assault he received in Bibb County.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Cara Fiore, and Alexander was represented by public defender Len Myers. The plea was accepted by Superior Court Judge Terry Massey.
A report of the incident leading to the charges by Jones County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Dustin Mosteller stated he was dispatched to a convenience store on Highway 49 April 14, 2021, in reference to a suspicious person looking in vehicles in the parking lot.
Mosteller said he observed the Chevrolet truck and the suspect walking to the vehicle from the other side of the parking lot. The deputy said he asked the man what he was doing there, and he said he was on a paper route.
Mosteller said the suspect walked toward him with one hand in the pocket of the black hoodie he was wearing. The officer said he instructed him to take his hand out of his pocket, and he did. The man gave him a name that turned out to be false and got back into his truck.
The deputy said he told the suspect, later identified as Alexander, not to go anywhere, but he put the truck into reverse and passed his unit turning right onto the highway.
Mosteller said he got behind the truck and activated his lights and siren. He attempted to get the driver to pull over, but the driver refused. During the pursuit, the deputy said they reached speeds of approximately 93 mph in a 45 zone, and he was instructed to disengage the chase.
The officer noted seeing the driver throw out a cup and its contents during the pursuit.
Mosteller contacted the person in charge of paper routes in the area and was able to get the name of the driver. He said Deputy William Jackson went to his residence and found a truck matching the description. Alexander was not there, but an inventory of the vehicle found a baggie of marijuana and another baggie with MDMA and Xanax pills.
