FOOTBALL SEASON
Greyhound fans will once again have the option of following Jones County Football wherever they are.
After five years of broadcasting the games, one of the members of the team, who now works for another school district, will no longer be able to join the broadcast, but the show will go on.
Adam Greene said doing the football broadcast with fellow Jones County High School alumnus Kyle Sears was a dream come true, but he plans to continue for at least another year.
Greene said in addition to the personnel change, there will also be a change in the company broadcasting the games.
The new company is Sportsmic. Greene said JCHS Coach Mike Chastain suggested the change. The coach is familiar with the company from their broadcasts of Houston County games.
Greene said the change in the app is the biggest difference, but the format will remain much the same. The Sportsmic app is now available at the Apple Store or Google Play on smartphones free of charge.
Sportsmic is also accessible online at sportsmic. com, which is also free of charge for listeners. The Greyhounds’ first broadcast of the year will be the Aug. 19 game against Northside that will played at 4 p.m. at Mercer University.
Greene said Kevin Hall will be assisting him during that broadcast.
“Kevin did a game with me last year and has a lot of football knowledge,” he said.
Greene said he will be broadcasting at least seven games this year, and Hall will help with four of them. He said Hall is from Baldwin County, and they met while attending Georgia College.
Sportsmic is owned by Greg Elrod, who grew up in Forsyth and loves football.
“I’m lucky enough to start a company to broadcast football. People who do this, love it,” he said.
Greene said he is looking forward to the collaboration with Sportsmic. The broadcaster graduated from Jones County High School in 2006. He got the idea of broadcasting the games because, after moving to Atlanta, he missed keeping up with the Greyhounds.
That was in 2018, and he pitched the idea to Sears, who was on board almost immediately.
They were able to hook up with Mixlr due to Sears’ connections through his job at Mercer University and were able to broadcast the away games that year.
Greene said the plan is to continue the interviews with the coach and players. This year the broadcasts will begin 30 minutes before the game.
“It feels like a good fit. I feel comfortable the broadcasts will continue if I need to hand them off in the future,” he said.
Elrod said he started Sportsmic in 2011 when he realized more signal was needed for the Houston County broadcasts. He said he started out working with the iHeart radio group and leased time for four years.
The Sportsmic App was added in 2016. The owner said he started out with Houston County, added Mary Persons, Mercer University and now Jones County.
“I feel like we have really good sports teams on our network,” Elrod said.
Greene said he is excited to work with Sportsmic. He said they will bring in their equipment and train him to use it. He said this will be a hybrid year working with their personnel.
Elrod said Greene has done a great job and he does not want to change that. He said Sportmic is dependable, reliable and easy to access.
“We have a convergence of great football teams in one spot. That will elevate them all,” he added.
Northside, Veterans, Perry and Warner Robins are also affiliate schools of Sportsmic.
Elrod said there is power in numbers that will gather momentum for the programs. He said the Sportsmic app has been downloaded more than 15,000 times.
Greene said Sportsmic and Greyhound Sports can be followed on Facebook. He said he comes from a family that has a legacy in JCHS football, starting with his grandfather JoJo Greene, who played quarterback for the Greyhounds and continued by his father Al Greene, who played center and halfback. Adam is 5’5” and not physically suited to play football.
“I knew I would get killed if I tried to play, but this is one way I can be a part of it,” he said.
