The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Aug. 17-20, 2023.
Aug. 25
While patrolling the area of Highway 49 and Chapman Road, Corporal Sullivan notice that the year decal on a vehicle was blank and appeared to be rubbed off. When he ran the tag number, Sullivan learned that the owner of the vehicle was wanted out of Bibb County and had a suspended license.
He conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver and passenger. The driver stated he did not have his license and gave a different name from the owner of the vehicle. While speaking to them, Sullivan noticed the smell of marijuana. The driver stepped out of the vehicle to look at the tag and then stated that his mother gave him the car.
Sullivan went back to his vehicle to check the driver’s name. The photos that showed up confirmed the driver was the owner of the vehicle. The driver was placed under arrest. Deputy Mattax began a search of the vehicle and found a glass container that had a green leafy substance, believed to be marijuana, and a Glock 17 9MM. The gun was checked and was not stolen and the driver was not a convicted felon. The female passenger was licensed and had no warrants. The gun and vehicle were released to her.
The driver was transported to the Jones County jail and was given a citation for the marijuana less than an ounce, driving on a suspended license and a warrant for giving false name to law enforcement. Bibb County placed a hold on him for the warrant.
Officer Pointer was patrolling the area near the Gray Bypass when he check a vehicle’s tag and learned that the registration was expired. He conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the female driver. Pointer advised the reason for the stop and while speaking with the driver, he detected the strong odor of green marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. When asked about the odor, the driver advised that her boyfriend used the car and he smokes marijuana in the vehicle. Pointer requested backup due to the odor. Pointer began a search of the vehicle. He located two unlabeled bottles of pills in the driver’s purse. There was also a sandwich bag with orange pills. Several blunt wraps were found in the vehicle. The driver was placed under arrest and was transported to the jail.
Jail staff located another pill in her purse. It was also taken into evidence. Warrants were granted for possession of Schedule II drug, possession of Schedule IV drug and drugs not in original container and a ticket was issued for expired registration.
