Other county ordinances

Dear Editor,

Getting back to John Woods comments in the JC News of August 10, he suggested looking at other ordinances from other counties and to pull out what fits. I personally along with other citizens think this is a good idea.

One that comes to mind is what Bibb County code enforcement officers told me that Jones County is wrong by having complaints first having to be turned in by citizens of JC. One of the officers told me that yes, they do work on citizens’ complaints but while they are out investigating a complaint and look across the street and see another person in violation, they have the authority to walk right over and issue a citation to that person. My question to you as commissioners why is this not the rule in JC?

Our code enforcement officer is paid by the taxpayers so why should we the citizens be the ones to have to do what she should be doing. Plus, she has a County vehicle and gasoline at taxpayers’ expense which she goes to her home in Milledgeville 5 days a week back and forth. One final point, if a deputy sheriff or Gray city policeman is sitting by the roadside watching for traffic violations, do they have to wait for a citizen to call and complain if someone is speeding? I don’t think so.

Sincerely, George Scoville
