“How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.”
(Ps 119:103-104) It’s football season again and many people are excited. Believe it or not, one of the reasons football is so wonderful are the rules. The rules make the game. They give structure and purpose to the moving of a ball up and down a field. Without those rules, the game would lack meaning; just a free for all that leads nowhere.
So it is with God’s word, His rules. Living by His commandments gives purpose and structure to our lives, while also bringing peace and contentment. The rules don’t save us, but the rules bring sense to what seems a senseless world. Doing what’s right in your own eyes is anarchy, but doing what God commands as shown in the Bible is peace. His word gives us guidance to avoid the false way, to avoid sin, to avoid an eternal Hell.
Of course there is one rule we all must obey or the game is done. We are commanded to be saved (1 Jn 3:23). This rule doesn’t save us but directs us to the One who does--Jesus. Miss this rule and you miss out on the purpose of life--Jesus. With Jesus it’s touchdown. Without Him is a penalty for eternity. Let God’s rules be sweeter than honey to you.
