Gray Elementary School held their annual Grandparents Day Breakfast Sept. 11 and 12, welcoming grandparents into the school to spend some quality time with their grandchildren who attend the school.
Vicky Bivins, one of the coordinators for the Grandparents Day Breakfast, said Grandparents Day at Gray Elementary School is important, because it brings the community to the school. She said a lot of grandparents have never visited the school, and she hopes they will now come back.
“We have so much grandparent participation on Grandparents Day, so we break it up between grade levels. We did kindergarten, second grade and fourth grade one day, then first grade, third grade and fifth grade the next,” she said. “We serve the students and grandparents various prepackaged food for the annual breakfast, so the line won’t get so backed up and they have time to enjoy each other’s company more.”
She said her favorite thing about Grandparents Day is greeting the grandparents each year. She said the grandparents are always very positive, even with the small things. She said she’s happy to see so many students getting support from their grandparents.
“Everyone was so excited for Grandparents Day here at Gray Elementary. There was nothing but smiles and loud chatter. This is something the students will always remember, and we’re glad the grandparents are taking an interest in their grandchildren’s education,” Bivins said.
Kaylee Podwolsky, a fourthgrade student at Gray Elementary School, said her favorite thing about her grandparents is how they do a lot of stuff with her. She said Grandparents Day is important for her, because she wants her grandparents to see what she’s doing in school and spend time with them at school.
“My grandparents picked me up, and we came to school to eat breakfast. I had a honeybun, water and a chewy bar with my grandparents,” the student said. “My grandpa drives a truck, and my grandma stays at home, then picks me up from school. I like Grandparents Day, because we get to spend time together.”
Podwolsky’s grandfather, Gary Thomas, said it was important to be at Grandparents Day, so he could show support for his granddaughter. He said life is too short, so he wants to spend as much time as he can with her.
“My granddaughter is a very smart little girl, and I enjoy spending time with her,” Thomas said. “I’m not home a lot, so I don’t always get to see her like I want to. I was fortunate enough to be able to be here for Grandparents Day and spend some special time with her. That’s all that really matters.”
