Lowe honored with Golden Eagle Award

HAIL TO THE CHIEF

The Central Georgia Council of the Boy Scouts of America is honoring Gray’s police chief next month in an event that is also a fundraiser for the organization.

Gray Police Chief Adam Lowe is being presented the Golden Eagle Award by the Jones County Friends of Scouting Oct. 12. The event will be held at Butler Hall, and proceeds will benefit the programs of scouts in Central Georgia.

The Golden Eagle Award is presented to leaders who are champions of community service and those who display scout qualities like loyalty, trustworthiness and kindness.

Lowe has served as Gray’s police chief since 2006. He started with the GPD in 2003 but has been in law enforcement since February of 1995. The chief began his career as a deputy with the Jones County Sheriff’s Office.

Lowe was born and raised in Jones County and attended Jones County schools, graduating from Jones County High School in 1992. After graduation, he worked on the loading dock of UPS and worked for a logging company.

“I never really thought about law enforcement,” the chief recalled.

That changed when Sheriff Butch Reece approached Lowe to work with the K-9 unit of the Georgia Department of Corrections, which he did for several months. When a deputy’s position came open, Lowe was offered the job.

Lowe worked his way up to sergeant before joining the Gray Police Department in 2003.

He said, after starting the job in law enforcement, he did not want to do anything else.

“I loved being a deputy and enjoyed meeting people out in the county I wouldn’t have known otherwise,” the chief said.

2006 was a big year for Lowe. It was the year he was appointed chief and married his wife, Chandra. He said their combined family consists of one daughter, four sons and two beautiful grandchildren.

The chief is not one to seek accolades for the job he does, but he said he was honored to be selected to receive the Golden Eagle Award from the Boy Scouts.

Gray City Councilman David Tufts is a member of the planning committee for the award dinner. He said all sponsorship donations are tax deductible. The cost of an individual seat for the Oct. 12 dinner is $50, and tables are available to businesses or organization for $600. Spaces are still available for the event.

Tufts can be reached by contacting The Jones County News office at 478-986-3929 for more information about the sponsorships.
