No time for Crown and Coke

Dep. Elrod was on routine patrol when he ran a random check on a vehicle tag number.

The information from the GCIC/ NCIC system alerted Elrod that the vehicle had no insurance.

Elrod, at that time, initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. When he made contact with the driver, the deputy advised the male the reason for the stop was no valid insurance. The male subject told the deputy that he did have insurance and it was normally paid directly from his checking account and the insurance should be up to date. The male also provided an insurance card to the deputy. Elrod went to his patrol car and looked up the insurance on the Georgia Dept. of Revenue website, and it also showed the vehicle had no valid insurance.

Elrod also called the insurance company listed on the card given to him by the male subject, and the insurance company advised the insurance had indeed lapsed and there was no valid insurance on the vehicle. Elrod returned to the male subject and advised him of his findings and that he would have to be taken to the LEC for no insurance. When Elrod did a vehicle inventory search, there was an open bottle of Crown Royal in the back pouch of the passenger seat and there was a full Coca-Cola in a cup in the front seat cup holder. Elrod could detect the smell of alcohol in the cup of Coke.

The male driver advised the deputy that he had just mixed the Crown and Coke and was about to drink some of it when he was stopped. Elrod noted that there was no smell of alcohol on the individual. The male was transported to the Jones County LEC where he was released on tickets at the jail.

The driver and a female passenger were asked to exit the vehicle so it could be further searched.
