DFE and GES gifted students work together

THANKSGIVING 2023

Dames Ferry Elementary School fifth grade gifted students and Gray Elementary School fifth grade gifted students came together for a Thanksgiving feast filled with Thanksgiving activities.

Victoria Bivins, gifted teacher at Gray Elementary School, said she was excited for the day and to see all of the fifthgrade gifted students from both schools together. She said it was a great day.

“Every year we get together with Dames Ferry for a Thanksgiving feast, and this is our third year,” she said. “We always come together at Gray Elementary for it, the kids get together, we plan activities for the whole day, and we have a nice feast together.” She said it’s important for the gifted students from both schools to get out of their comfort zone and meet new people. She said once the fifthgrade students get together in middle school, they will already know someone who attended a different school.

“The day was filled with lots of creativity. They had to take a picture of something that resembled a turkey tail and turn it into anything but a turkey. They did some digital breakout escape rooms. Everything was higher order thinking to be centered around being a gifted student,” Bivins said.

Sophia Edmonson, fifth grade student from Gray Elementary School, said she was glad Dames Ferry Elementary students could join them at Gray Elementary School for a Thanksgiving feast and spend time together. She said it was a fun time getting together to celebrate with everyone. She said it’s important for people to be thankful for what they have.

“This was a great time of year to be together for something like this feast,” the student said. “I looked forward to seeing my friends from Dames Ferry and hanging out with them. My favorite thing about Thanksgiving is going to my granny’s house.”

The teacher said they had a lot of fun doing the activities and hanging out with each other.

She said the students were served turkey, macaroni and cheese, green beans, corn, rolls, and different desserts for the Thanksgiving feast.

“I like hearing the students talk about their own traditions in their family about Thanksgiving. They always have a variety of stories to tell. It’s nice to hear about what others do on that day,” the gifted teacher said.

Taylor Paul, fifth grade student from Dames Ferry Elementary School, said the Thanksgiving feast was important, because she was able to socialize with new people from Gray Elementary School. She said she was able to make new friends.

“My favorite thing about the feast was being able to make new friends, but my favorite thing about Thanksgiving is being able to spend the day with my family members,” Paul said. “Thanksgiving is important to celebrate, because it’s a fun day I can engage with my family. My favorite Thanksgiving dish is dinner rolls, because they are sweet and soft.”
