Breadth of roster helps Lady Hounds stay on winning track

GIRLS HOOPS

The Lady Greyhounds see their depth and ability to outlast the opposition as a strength.

That asset’s importance was reinforced in last week’s Wade Classic at Clarke Central in Athens.

“Being in shape, that gets us further,” Lady Greyhounds head coach ChoRhonda Gwaltney- Harris said.

After getting a fairly easy win against Greene County 65-37, the Lady Hounds went into a matchup with Walnut Grove down a player or two with Britley Johnson and Amaris Ridgeway not in the lineup.

So what did the Lady Hounds do? Simply dig deep and win a close game in the final seconds, 44- 43.

“I was hoping that other kids would step up, and that’s what happened,” Gwaltney-Harris said. “We played with what we had. They stepped it up, competed and got a big stop in the end.”

The win extended Jones County’s record to 4-1 entering this week that was marked by the start of region play on Tuesday at Union Grove.

Carlie Skinner would end up leading the Lady Greyhounds in scoring with 15 points to go with two assists and two steals. Mya Anderson had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Aja Bullard chipped in six points and four rebounds, while Kamiyah Adams pulled down 10 rebounds to go with three points.

Against Greene County, Ridgeway had 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists to go along with Johnson’s 14 points, five boards, four assists and four steals. Anderson also scored in double figures with 11 points. Autumn Coleman added nine points, and Adams led with 12 rebounds in addition to eight points.

“We started off rough and picked it up in the end,” Gwaltney-Harris said. “We kind of pressed them and blew it open.”
