The Lady Greyhounds gave Union Grove their best shot in last week’s region opener, hanging with the region front-runner, who is also ranked among the state’s top teams in a 49-39 loss.
Jones County didn’t take long to vent its frustration, routing Houston County at home 63-24 on Friday and Northside 51-31 on the road Saturday.
“We felt like we let one get away; we just didn’t take care of the basketball,” Lady Greyhounds head coach ChoRhonda Gwaltney-Harris said of the Union Grove loss. “We did a lot more of it to ourselves, so we wanted to get in here and work on some things and get better.”
Defensive pressure set the tone on Friday, frequently discombobulating the Bears, who went more than 12 combined minutes into the game before scoring a single point. By then, JCHS was up 24-2 and led 31-9 at halftime following a 16-0 lead after a quarter.
“That’s our thing, if we can press you and get you down and tied, that’s what we want to do,” Gwaltney-Harris said.
The wide margin of victory ended up allowing multiple Lady Greyhounds (6-2) to rotate into the game for a balanced scoresheet with five players scoring in double figures. Autumn Coleman and Mya Anderson’s 11 led Jones County with 10 points apiece from Kamiyah Adams, Carlie Skinner and Amaris Ridgeway.
Jones County kept up the momentum Saturday with a 51-31 win against Northside, giving them six wins in seven games entering this week.
