When big plays have happened for the Greyhounds the past four years, especially the previous two, the speed of either Zion Ragins or Tyler Stewart has usually been a part of it. Of Jones County’s 36 passing touchdowns this past season, 28 came from either Ragins or Stewart.
Both made their college future official on last Wednesday’s early signing day. There was little drama as Ragins officially signed with Oklahoma, and Stewart inked with Temple. Both had previously committed to their school of choice.
The Sooners will be getting one of Georgia’s fastest overall players in Ragins, who this past season was a key part of the Greyhounds offense, either through screen passes or via the run game to take advantage of his speed.
Ragins, who this season had 45 catches for 720 yards, wraps up his JCHS career with 2,923 receiving yards and 32 touchdowns.
Ragins is part of an Oklahoma signing class ranked in the top 10 by multiple recruting services. He was one of four receivers in the group of early signees for the Sooners as they prepare for a move to the SEC.
As for Stewart, he’ll end his time in the purple and gold of Jones County with more than 2,000 receiving yards.
He had more than half of those yards this past season, hauling in 1,265 yards worth of it and 21 touchdowns.
That speed from Stewart made him a constant deep threat for the Greyhounds, and the Owls apparently took notice. He was one of two receivers in Temple’s signing class.
Ragins and Stewart could face each other in their first game next year. On Aug. 31, Temple plays at Oklahoma.
The Owls, who compete in the American Athletic Conference, have road games next year at East Carolina and Tulane. ECU could also produce a JCHS reunion as Javious Bond was one of the Pirates’ top rushers this season, and Javion Clark also saw time late in the season on defense.
