Lady Hounds cement third place with gritty road win

GREYHOUND HOOPS

The Lady Greyhounds went on the road Friday and came away with a solid hold on third place in the region. Jones County passed the halfway turn of the region slate with a gritty 32-30 win against Dutchtown, a team that JCHS usually ends up neck-and-neck with for a state tournament berth.

With Friday’s triumph, the Lady Hounds have beaten every team in the region except Warner Robins and Union Grove, both of which are ranked in the top five in AAAAA. JCHS, ranked eighth, hosts second-ranked Union Grove on Friday. The Wolverines won the first meeting 49-39 in November.

The Lady Greyhounds are now 14-4 on the season and 4-2 in the region, one game ahead of fourth-place Eagles Landing and two in front of Dutchtown.

Jones County trailed early Friday against the Bulldogs but kept it close despite leading scoring Amaris Ridgeway being unable to play. The Lady Hounds simply leaned on their depth and outrebounded Dutchtown 29-26 and held a 14-11 edge in steals had mounted four blocks to the Bulldogs one.

All of that added up to Jones County finding a way to win, pulling within a point late in the first half with Carlie Skinner’s three pointer to trail 13-12. The Lady Greyhounds kept digging, going on to tie it 21-21 on a three-point shot by Aubrey Norris. That helped move the lead to JCHS, which turned away Dutchtown in the closing seconds when Britley Johnson came up with a steal near half court. Skinner’s nine points led Jones County with Kamiyah Adams scoring six to go with the five from Norris and Mya Anderson.
