Greyhounds get tourney win, gain rest entering 2024

The goals are two-fold for the Greyhounds right now. Ahead of this weekend’s region duals, which Jones County will host, there’s a desire to wrestle at a high level and also get rest. The first of those was taken care of to end the 2023 calendar year when the Greyhounds won the Raider Invitational, beating teams that included Columbus, a state champion last year.

“Every day, it’s You vs. You and being better than you were the day before,” Greyhounds head coach Adam Gillhouse said of the team’s current mentality. “Right now, the big thing is seeing how everyone has improved since November. Peaking at the right time is the goal.”

The win came thanks to success up and down and Greyhounds’ roster with six finishes of third or better, four being first place showings. Aiden Lipford and Arrie Martin were among the overall winners, taking first at 126 and 144 pounds with Robert Scott doing likewise at 150 and Landon Lewis in the 106-pound division. Hunter McCleskey gave JCHS another stout performance in the lower weight classes, taking second at 113 pounds while on the other end of the spectrum, Will Agudelo was third at 285 pounds.

“It was a good opportunity for some guys who had lost some matches to some guys earlier this year, to have a chance to go against them again,” Gillhouse said.

With another tournament win, JCHS took last weekend off, giving wrestlers a chance to get rest and recuperate from minor injuries and soreness that add up over the course of a season. The goal? To be rested for this weekend where the Greyhounds’ state tournament berth will be at stake.

“Everybody is just hurt right now, we made the decision to take the weekend off and have a lighter practice to give them some time so that they’ll be ready to go,” Gillhouse said.
