HOOP HOUNDS
When the Greyhounds and Lady Hounds aim for a region tournament title next month, all they’ll need to do is win multiple games over a short span of days. They’ll get a slice of that intensity within a short timeframe this week.
Thanks to some schedule shuffling last week, both teams will now play two region games in two days this week. It’ll begin Thursday night at home when, six days after originally scheduled, JCHS hosts Union Grove. There won’t be much time to rest, however. On Friday, both teams take a road trip to Locust Grove.
That’ll set the table for a four-game sprint to end the regular season. Jan. 23 begins a 10-day span of games against Eagles Landing, Warner Robins, Ola and Dutchtown with Ola and Dutchtown on Jan. 30 and Feb. 2 at home. Of those teams, only Ola is not currently among the top five teams in the region in both girls and boys basketball.
The span of games will conclude the regular season and set seeding for the region tournament. The higher the seed for the region tournament, the better draw the Lady Greyhounds and Greyhounds receive in their quest to, at the least, advance to the region tournament semifinals and earn a state tournament berth.
Building momentum begins Friday against Union Grove. For the No. 8 Lady Greyhounds, currently third in the region with a record of 14-4 overall and 4-2 in the region, it represents a chance to take down a Wolverines team rated as high as the top team in AAAAA.
The ninth-ranked Greyhounds, who beat Union Grove 58-54 in November, will be seeking to bounce back from their first region loss of the season Jan. 5 at Dutchtown. Despite the loss, their record stands at 15-3 overall and 5-1 in the region, putting them in second place.
