SUPERIOR COURT
A defendant arrested in connection with a November shooting in a Jones County neighborhood received a 10-year sentence last week after entering a guilty plea.
Jesus Antonio Oberle, 23, was in Jones County Superior Court Jan. 29 to enter his plea to the charge of aggravated assault. As a result of plea negotiations, he received a sentence of 10 years for the offense with the first year to be served in confinement. The remainder of his sentence is to be served on probation.
Oberle was arrested Nov. 20 as the result of a reported shooting incident that took place Nov. 17, and he was indicted by a Jones County Grand Jury Dec. 11 for two counts of aggravated assault and one count of terroristic threats.
Arrest
A report of the incident leading to Oberle’s arrest by Jones County Sheriff’s Officer Deputy Matthew Dennis states he was dispatched Nov. 17 to Bone Creek Road at approximately 9:30 a.m. in reference to a shooting. He said he was informed while en route to the call that two males were arguing. One began shooting but had left the scene.
The deputy said Lt. Wesley Ransom, Sgt. Travis Walker and Deputy Ayla Morris also responded to the call.
Dennis said, once on scene, he spoke to witnesses and was told the argument started about moving a vehicle and escalated when one pulled a firearm. The individual with the firearm was later identified as Oberle.
Witnesses told Dennis that attempts to deescalate the situation were unsuccessful, and Oberle fired at the other two males involved. One of the males was reportedly struck by debris or grazed by a bullet but refused treatment.
The deputy said he was told Oberle fired four more times toward the group of people before fleeing the scene. He said shots were fired in the air by another person on the scene with the intent of scaring off Oberle.
Dennis said he was also advised that the offender had made threats that he was coming back to the scene with automatic weapons.
