Kiwanis donates to Scouting Committee of Jones County

The Kiwanis Club donated $2,385 to the Scouting Committee of Jones County, Inc., which manages the Eston Altman Scouting Center. Kiwanis President Charles Newberry presented the check to Brandy Spires, President of the scouting committee. Mrs. Spires spoke to the club on the reorganization of the committee and the maintenance and improvements being made to the center. The center is named after long time Kiwanis member, Eston Altman, who initiated the idea of building the scouting center and worked tirelessly to raise money and promote the project, including donating much of the cost himself. Sheriff Butch Reece was instrumental in building the center also as well as maintaining it. The funds donated by Kiwanis came from some of the proceeds of the Francis Golson Memorial Golf Tournament. The other proceeds were donated to Scout Troop 485 which is sponsored by Kiwanis. CONTRIBUTED
