Public library invites all for adventure
The Jones County Library is kicking off their summer reading program May 23, and this year’s theme is all about different adventures, which can be found in books.
Julie King, the branch manager of the Jones County Public Library, said she is ready for adventures in summer reading. She said there is going to be lots to do at the library this summer.
“We are very excited about summer reading this year, and this year’s theme is adventures. We are dividing the library up into adventure areas,” she said. “One area is space, another area is a jungle, another area is outdoor adventures, another is oceans, and we just have a lot of different things we are going to be doing.”
She said summer reading starts May 23, and students can sign up by visiting https://www. beanstack.com/ or they can visit the library to get signed up. She added the sooner people sign up for summer reading, the better.
The Jones County Board of Education’s summer reading will be in conjunction with their own, so they will need to visit the Jones County Public Library to get their points and time in for school.
The branch manager said every five hours people read a book, whether they are adults, teenagers or children, they get a prize. The goal is to reach 25 hours of reading.
“We have so many activities going on this summer starting in June. We have the Museum of Arts and Sciences coming on June 12 at 1 p.m., and that day will be our kickoff for summer reading. It will be a big show. They will have lemurs and all kinds of animals. Every week we will have a big show,” the branch manager said.
King said Georgia College will have their Star Lab on June 18 at 10 a.m. It will be an indoor planetarium, and they will have ocean art on June 26 starting at 9 a.m.
She said Pete the Cat will be visiting the library on July 10 at 10 a.m. for fairytale week. Piedmont Wildlife Refuge will be doing a wildlife show on July 17 at 10 a.m., and they will be bringing Smokey the Bear.
King noted that the Georgia AG Experience will be bringing a mobile classroom July 15 at 9 a.m., and the last big activity will be historical dance on July 24 at 10 a.m.
“Beyond the big activities each week, we will still have our theme each week,” King said. “We will have four movie matinees, STEAM kits for the kids, craft kits for the kids to take, and more. The whole summer will be full of activities for the kids.”
The branch manager said it’s important for the students to engage in summer reading, so they can stay up on their reading.
She said she doesn’t want them to lose the knowledge they gained from the year before, and it’s also a great way to make reading fun with prizes, so she hopes to see everyone at the library this summer.
“Summer reading is such an exciting time of year. This is such a community center for Gray,” King said. “The kids are ready for summer reading. We are here to help people find something they will enjoy reading. Reading is an adventure, and it’s exciting to become part of that world.”
