Independence Day

Dear Editor,

Americans celebrate the July 4th, Independence Day, holiday this week. This is a day that stands tall in the history of the world.

What an exciting and frightening time it must have been to live in America in the 1700s. We cannot begin to fathom the emotions our ancestors felt at that momentous time.

The pilgrims were of the most courageous people of all time! What a leap of faith to make such a dangerous journey into the unknown! Many did not survive the voyage, and others did not survive the first months and years in this new land.

Remember that Capt. Robert Hunt planted An Appeal To Heaven flag on that hill at Jamestown, declaring this to be a nation based on Scripture and honorable to God, with the mission of taking the gospel to the ends of the earth.

America did not become a sovereign nation until many faithful settlers, both young and old, fought, suffered, and sacrificed during the American Revolution. Many even gave their lives in this War for Independence. History shows that God blessed the desires and efforts of these people, resulting in the victory and freedom from outside control of Britain.

What an exciting and frightening time it must have been to live in America during the 1700s! We cannot begin to fathom the emotions our ancestors felt at that momentous time. Imagine the sound made from the exhales of relief when the news of independence was officially announced. It must have been loud and powerful, like a ROAR, as they began to ponder the consequences of America’s victory for freedom was officially announced. The joy, laughter, relief, cheers, celebrations, and tears released on that Independence Day are difficult to truly comprehend.

I pray the citizens of America, and especially of Jones County, will set apart time on this July 4th for the purpose of truly thanking AND blessing God for placing us in this Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. I also pray we spend part of our holiday praying for our nation. America needs to make a U-Turn back to our founding principles which are our roots, and rediscover our values and commonsense!

Americans must rediscover an informed patriotism through basic, not biased and altered, knowledge of our history.

God is most certainly NOT happy with our nation right now, for many reasons. One wonders why He has not given up on America, but He has NOT! He is faithful. There are still many righteous people here and it is OUR responsibility to do what the last few generations have not done. COMMIT to sincere intercession first, then He will reveal to you and to me what He wants and needs us to do. We need revelation as to exactly what He needs us, His body, to do. We must then TAKE those steps of obedience and not grow weary. (Galatians 6:9; Isaiah 40:31; Hebrews 12) There is another Independence Day I want to mention. That is the day we understand that we are ALL sinners and have missed the mark, realizing our eternal destination isn’t heavenward. As humans, we cannot possibly meet the requirements of the Old Testament Law, but praise God for the New Covenant through the blood and death of Jesus Christ! (Romans 6:23; 2 Corinthians 5:21; John 14:6; Romans 10:9) Independence Day from eternal death comes only when honestly admit we are sinners, sincerely ask Jesus to save us through His atoning blood (we cannot do it ourselves), and diligently seek to know and follow Him more with every passing day. Bible reading and church attendance are good ways to accomplish that. The great news is the war for the souls of humanity HAS BEEN WON! Jesus already won the victory! BUT not everyone knows this! Many are still on the losing side of this battle, and will continue this way, unless someone (maybe you) shows them the pathway to independence from the wages of death through the freedom from sin available to ALL in Jesus Christ.

Sincerely, Debra Hall
