As Takeo Gray goes through the offseason as a head coach for the first time, not quite everything is new.
With him being a native of Gray and graduate of Jones County High School, he estimates that he knew of about half of his players before he even took the job after previously being an assistant at Westside Macon.
Gray and the Lady Greyhounds spent a good part of June’s busy slate getting to know each other between going to various camps and other scrimmage settings hosted by schools such as Warner Robins and West Laurens.
Through that, the Lady Greyhounds were measured by firm competition.
“We saw some high-level competition,” Gray said. “It’s been going great. They’ve gotten used to me, and I’ve gotten used to them.”
That setting has also served as a means for the Lady Hounds to show how well they are picking up a new scheme as Gray takes over following ChoRhonda Harris moving to Northside in the offseason.
“With a new system, they are getting used to me,” Gray said.
“They’ve adjusted well. We have a great group, and they are catching on well.”
Come July, the focus goes from outside competition to inward focus, honing in on improving from a skill standpoint and getting stronger by way of strength and conditioning.
“They’ve been going non-stop, so after dead week it’ll be more skill work and time in the weight room,” Gray said.
