Lady Hounds show ‘commitment to get better’

For most teenagers, an ideal summer might involve sleeping in during the morning hours.

And although that may be typical, the Lady Greyhounds softball team is among the groups in which that is an exception.

“The big thing this time of year is being willing to be there,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Tripp Burt said. “Getting up early is tough, but our girls have been there at 6:50 in the morning for workouts. They’ve got a commitment to get better.”

Like all student-athletes across the state, the Lady Greyhounds were off last week during the GHSA’s second dead week of the summer.

That came after a summer of getting on-field work in during early morning hours to go along with logging time in the weight room as well for a JCHS team looking to return to GHSA State Softball Elite 8 in Columbus.

“We had our kids camp and then went into a few weeks of workouts,” Burt said. “We got in the weight room and got some work on the offensive and defensive side. We saw some really good things.”

The Lady Hounds were upset in the super regionals two years ago while a season ago were undone by injuries in the closing stretch of the season.

After Jones County began the summer with its annual youth softball camp, the focus turned to summer workouts, where there’s a strong continued foundation of which to build from the once again contend for a trip to Columbus.

“We have a good group that’s willing to work hard and is willing to get better each day,” Burt said.
