Real Life

Then said the Lord unto me, What seest thou, Jeremiah? And I said, Figs; the good figs, very good; and the evil, very evil, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.” (Jer 24:3) Good figs. Evil figs.

Just like people. And this is what the figs represent.

People. Some good; some good for nothing.

The evil figs are so evil they could not be eaten, rotten beyond rotten.

Humans can become just as evil, rotten beyond rotten. Their souls closed to anything of God. They mock Him, they curse Him, they deny Him, they blaspheme Him, they profane His name.

And they do all this with impunity, without remorse. No fear of God at all in their hearts. Just as you throw rotten figs that cannot be eaten into the trash, God has no choice but to cast such people into the Lake of Fire.

The good figs on the other hand are blessed by God. These folks honor God, love Him, worship Him, praise Him, speak His name with reverence. They have a healthy fear of God. God in return sets His eyes upon them for good, and one day will bring them into His Heavenly kingdom (v6).

But they aren’t good because of works they have done. They’re good because they have put their faith in Jesus, and in turn Jesus has imputed His good to them, washing away their sins.

A fig that turns rotten or a fig redeemed by Jesus. Which will you be?
