Lady Hounds maintain focus in advance of critical stretch

SOFTBALL HOUNDS

In multi-round golf tournaments, ‘moving day’ is used to refer to the next-to-last round, a time for hopefuls to get in position to go for a top finish.

As far as the region softball race goes, that’s where the Lady Greyhounds find themselves right now.

JCHS began that with ease on Thursday, making quick work of McDonough in a 15-0 three-inning win before this past Tuesday’s game against Hampton.

“Their pitcher threw strikes,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Tripp Burt said. “They did a good job of being ready and taking care of the little things.”

“All of that led into Wednesday’s matchup at home against Locust Grove. The reason is simple. As the week began, Jones County was 6-4 in the region.

That put the Lady Greyhounds in fifth place, those losses coming in matchups in the first half of the region schedule to Ola, Eagles Landing Christian, Locust Grove and Union Grove.

Locust Grove entered the week two games up on JCHS for the all-important fourth-place spot in the standings. The top four in the final standings to end the season will advance to the state tournament, making this past Wednesday even more critical.

For that reason, playing well and focused last week was a thing of importance in terms of the Lady Greyhounds doing all things possible to hit their stride going into this week.

“It’s hard to flip the switch.

You want to do the little things well in games like these,” Burt said. “We want to be ready to go (this week) and hit on all cylinders.”

JCHS hosts ELCA on Sept.

24, Union Grove Sept. 25 and wraps up the region slate Oct. 3 at home against Ola.

Jones County took on the role of aggressor, pushing 13 first-inning runs across against the Warhawks before subbing reserves in and scoring twice in the third inning with Ensley Barnes getting the pitching shutout.
