Crime Watch

The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Sept. 7-15, 2024.

Sept. 7

Wanted, suspended and expired registration

Officer Pointer was patrolling the area near the Gray Bypass when he ran a vehicle tag number to verify insurance and registration. The information came back to show the owner was wanted and had suspended, expired registration. Pointer pursued the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The officer met with the female driver and advised her the reason for the stop. At that time, Pointer detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Pointer asked the female driver to exit the vehicle and placed her in handcuffs. The officer had dispatch confirm the warrant and the female was placed in his patrol car where she was transported to the Jones County LEC. At the jail, the female was issued citations for suspended and expired tag and held to be picked up by Bibb County for the active warrant.

Multiple offenses

Lt. Hunnicutt received an alert via Flock Camera on an expired tag. Hunnicutt ran the tag information through the GCIC system, and it came back to show the tag expired, no valid insurance, and the owner has a suspended license and multiple warrants for his arrest. The GCIC system also came back to show the vehicle was a different color than the tag information shows. Officer Pointer and Hunnicutt began checking the area for the vehicle. Officer Pointer saw the vehicle and observed the driver getting out of the vehicle at a nearby business. Lt. Hunnicutt arrived on scene with his blue lights activated and made contact with the driver. The lieutenant instructed the driver to put his hands up and immediately placed him in handcuffs. Hunnicutt escorted the driver to the rear of Officer Pointer’s patrol vehicle.

Once in the vehicle the male subject began kicking the right rear passenger door of the vehicle. This caused the door of the patrol car to bow out on the outside as well as loosen the window and window frame.

The subject was transported to the LEC by Officer Pointer. Upon checking the VIN number on the vehicle, it did not match the VIN number associated with the plate affixed to the vehicle. The VIN number was checked through Georgia and all surrounding states, and the VIN was not listed. A vehicle inventory was completed and a 9mm Hi-point was located along with a cold open bottle of beer. Hunnicutt contacted a magistrate Judge and explained the damage done to the patrol vehicle caused by the offender. The Judge issued a warrant for interfering with government property.

The male subject was also charged with driving while license suspended, no insurance, expired registration, affixing a tag with intent to conceal identity and open container then turned over to jail staff for booking.

Sept. 11

Possession of meth

Officer Jones was dispatched to a local business to make contact with probation officers. Dispatch advised they found suspected drugs on one of their offenders as they were searching him. Upon arrival, Jones made contact with the probation officers and the male offender. While searching the subject, they found a small bag containing a crystal-like substance suspected to be methamphetamine in a baggie. Jones placed the offender in his patrol car and transported him to the Jones County LEC. Due to the suspected meth found on the subject, Jones took out a warrant for possession of meth and the State of Georgia probation will be taking out and securing a warrant for violation of probation. Jones served the warrant to the subject in the jail.
