Hounds, Lady Hounds thrive on shorter course

CROSS COUNTRY HOUNDS

The feel was different for Jones County last Wednesday at Bleckley County. While most of its meets are run on Saturday mornings on courses longer in length, last week’s two-mile event at Bleckley County was shorter than many meets that the Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds enter, and it was contested in the late afternoon on the home course of a Royals program expected to contend for a state title in the GHSA Class AA classification.

That didn’t seem to rattle JCHS, as the Greyhounds took first and the Lady Greyhounds finished second as both teams build gradually toward the GHSA sectionals on Nov. 2.

The Greyhounds, with an average time of 10:36, took first with consecutive finishers in the second through sixth positions, led by Luke Thornton’s 10:36. He wasn’t the only Greyhound near the front as the field cross the finish line, as Tyler Marshall was third with a time of 10:38.13 in front of Grady Newby’s 10:40.16 and Andrew Marshall’s 10:41.32 to round out the top five.

Shaun Williams’ 10:41.85 was good for sixth with the Greyhounds’ nextbest runner outside their top five being Clay Lacy in ninth with a time of 10:57.44.

A trio of Lady Hounds finished in the top five of the girls race with Addison Robinson, Lilly Palmer and Isabella Sanchez finishing third, fourth and fifth with times of 12:06.91, 12:20.16 and 12:23.63. Camryn Wommack’s eighth-place 12:53.72 gave JCHS four top-10 finishes in front of Tanner Watts running a 13:13.16 for 11th.

Jordan Norman-Brown’s 14:29.60 was good for 19th.

Jones County also won first in the JV boys race and took second in the girls JV event. Top boys finishers were Ian Borsahole and Gunner Kent in first and second with Dalton Russell in fourth, Dawson Walker in sixth and Lane Schomber in 12th.

The top finishes in the girls JV race came from Catelen Myers, Taylor Minter, Brooklyn. Rogers and Ava Tam as they came in fifth, seventh, ninth and tenth with Sage Ward in 11th.

Middle school girls first, boys second at Bleckley Meet

The top of the leaderboard was filled with middle school runners from Jones County last Wednesday in Cochran with runners in four of the top five finish positions in the girls race going to runners from Jones County schools for an overall finish of third while the boys claimed a pair of top-10 finishes in the Bleckley County Invitational.

In the event held on a course of two miles, Mary Barnwell and Phoebe Palmer took first and second with Madison Marshall, running for Hounds Distance Company, coming in fourth in front of another Jones County Middle School runner, Charleigh Feizet, who came in fifth.

Kennedy Marshall gave Jones County another top-10 finish as she came in ninth in front of Emma Hammond in 11th. Jones County also got top-20 finishes from Peyton Tate in 12th and Kaitlyn Flickinger in 13th. The boys race saw four finishes in the top 20 from Jones County runners, led by Aiden Davis in 7th and Owen Wommack in 10th.

That was followed up by Cruz Hudgins coming in 15th and Brooks Scott in 18th.

Last week’s meet preceded the conference championship meet, held this past Wednesday at the JCHS home course.
