The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Nov. 28 – Dec. 3, 2024.
Nov. 28
Suspended license
Deputy Elrod was on routine patrol observing traffic on the Gray Bypass. Elrod ran a tag number from a vehicle, and it came back to show that the registered owner had a suspended license. At that time, Elrod activated his blue lights and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The deputy made contact with the male driver, advised the reason for the stop, and placed the male subject in handcuffs. The male was transported to the Jones County LEC for booking and issued a citation for driving on a suspended license.
Arrest warrant
Deputy Elrod was on routine patrol when he received an alert regarding a vehicle entering Jones County near Highway 49 and Joycliff Road that had suspended registration and no insurance.
Elrod was able to locate the vehicle on Hwy. 49 and verified the tag number through the GCIC/NCIC system. The verification came back to show that the registration and insurance were not valid.
Elrod activated his blue lights and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. Elrod made contact with the driver and was able to identify him. The deputy also found that the male driver was wanted out of Bibb County. The male subject was able to obtain insurance on the scene, however due to the warrant out of Bibby County the male was placed in handcuffs and transported to the Jones County LEC to be held for pick up by Bibb County.
Dec. 2
Possession of controlled substance
Deputy Robinson was dispatched to a residence in regard to a dispute. When Robinson arrived on scene, he met with the female complainant that advised her daughter was doing drugs all night and was acting out of control. The complainant also told the deputy that she had taken some of the drugs away from her daughter, and she handed Robinson a clear container with a blue lid which contained what appeared to be a meth crystal like substance. The complainant also advised the deputy that the juvenile daughter of the female subject had found the container of drugs and tried to take them to her mother, but the complainant grabbed the meth from the juvenile and kept it. Robinson asked if the female subject was still inside the house and the complainant advised she was.
The deputy was escorted into the bedroom of the female subject, and he asked the female about the drugs in the container. The female stated she did not know about any drugs, and she did not have any drugs. Robinson went back outside the residence and advised the complainant that he was going to contact the drug investigations unit and inform them of the case. The deputy made contact with Inv. Nelson who stated to go ahead and charge the female with possession of a controlled substance. Robinson also made contact with Sgt. Sullivan who stated he would contact the District Attorney’s office and see what they thought about the charges. The DA advised Robinson to pursue the charges of possession of a controlled substance. The female was then transported to the Jones County LEC to await charges for possession of controlled substance.
Dec. 3
False report of a crime
Deputy Shurley was dispatched to a residence in regard to a male subject waiving a firearm. When Shurley arrived, he immediately knew the area due to previous calls. Shurley went up to the door of the residence and knocked where he was met by two young men. The deputy asked if the homeowner was there, and they advised that he and his wife were at work at that time and the two young males were babysitting. The deputy asked the two young males if they had been outside recently and if either of them had waved around a firearm. They advised the deputy that they had not and had been inside with the kids. Shurley went to his patrol car and attempted to make contact with the complainant that was listed as the caller of the incident. The deputy was not able to make contact with the complainant. At that time, the homeowner pulled up at the residence where Shurley and Deputy Elrod were standing outside the home. The deputy advised the homeowner of the reason they were there. The male homeowner stated that he just got home, and he does not even own a firearm. The deputy made contact with one of the neighbors to see if they may have called the report in, and the neighbor advised they had not. Dispatch was able to trace the phone number of the original call and location of the call. Shurley is going to meet with investigations to see if there is enough to charge the persons with false report of a crime.
