During duals season of wrestling, every match has the backdrop of an overall team score.
Points gained by wins or salvaged by way of losing only by a major decision rather than a pin, can help pile up points as one team competes against another.
That chapter ends for the Greyhounds at the end of this week. Starting Feb. 1, every match from now to the end of the season will be geared to how each individual fares.
It’s one that Jones County will enter with expectations to send multiple grapplers to the GHSA state traditional championships the weekend of Feb. 14 at the Macon Coliseum. But before that time arrives, there are two rounds that the JCHS wrestlers have to get to in their quest to take the floor in downtown Macon.
Last season, Jones County had 14 wrestlers place in the top four in the region meet, good enough to advance to sectionals with three wrestlers a year ago, a total of three Greyhounds placed, aiding the Greyhounds to a top-10 finish as a total of nine were state qualifiers.
Based on performances during duals season, top contenders to advance figure to be a group including Dawson Walker, Shooter Lumley, Hunter McCleskey, Noah Pieterick, Little, Nate McDaniel, Luke Thompson, Jacob Skinner, Nate Wilson, Hunter Hardwick, John Rackley and Barrett Rosenberger.
The Greyhounds now have a goal to match, if not exceed that, starting at this weekend’s region traditional tournament at Union Grove. The top four places per weight class there will earn a spot in sectionals on Feb. 8 at Cambridge.
