The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Jan. 16-17, 2025.
Jan. 16
Warrant executed
Deputy Ribeiro was dispatched to a local residence in order to serve a warrant on a female for probation violation. Upon his arrival at the residence, Ribeiro observed the female subject was outside. The deputy made contact with the female subject and advised her she had an active warrant. The female was handcuffed and transported to the Jones County Jail without incident.
Jan. 17
Attempt to flee officer
Deputy Marcum was patrolling the area of Joycliff Road near Gray Highway, when he noticed a vehicle that did not come to a complete stop at a stop sign before turning right. Marcum activated his emergency lights in attempt to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver slowed down to approximately 25 mph but did not pull over. Marcum then “chirped” his siren and again it appeared that the driver was going to pull over, however, the subject kept driving. The deputy activated his siren and the driver still kept driving. Marcum notified Jones County dispatch that the vehicle was not pulling over and he was in a low-speed pursuit. Sgt. Walker approved the chase and advised Marcum to use the PIT maneuver, if necessary, on the vehicle. The vehicle and deputy were still traveling at approximately 25 mph and Marcum, due to his experience, knew that a PIT maneuver at such slow speeds could render his patrol vehicle disabled. The driver eventually pulled over on R.L. Wheeler Road near McCard Lane. Marcum positioned his vehicle to block the subject’s vehicle so it could not continue to move. Deputy Reno and Deputy Brown arrived on scene to assist. Marcum exited his patrol car and ordered the male subject out of the vehicle.
The male finally complied after the second command Marcum gave and exited the vehicle. The male subject was immediately placed in handcuffs. A search of the male subject was done, and nothing was found on the male’s person nor in the vehicle. The male driver advised Marcum that he thought he was having an asthma attack. Marcum requested EMS to the scene.
EMS cleared the male subject at that time. The male was transported to the Jones County LEC where he was released to jail staff and charged with fleeing/ attempting to elude, disobey traffic control devices, failure to maintain lane and canceled registration.
Warrant and marijuana possession
Deputy Elrod was alerted to a vehicle entering Jones County that had expired registration.
Elrod checked the tag number of the vehicle through the GCIC/ NCIC system, and it came back to show the tag was expired, the registered owner had a suspended license and was also wanted out of Bibb County. Elrod was able to locate the vehicle traveling on Shurling Drive near New Clinton Road and initiated a traffic stop. Elrod made contact with the female driver and noticed the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.
Due to the odor of marijuana, a probable cause search was conducted and a freshly burnt marijuana blunt was located in the center console of the vehicle.
The female was transported to the Jones County LEC for booking and issued citations for possession of marijuana less than one ounce, suspended license and expired registration.
