Diamond Hounds get up to speed ahead of season

The tight window of time isn’t doing much for the Greyhounds in the way of favors.

Last Monday was the first official day for Jones County to be on the field for practice, and after a few days of tryouts, the field of players was thinned out.

“We did some things during the fall and were able to kind of see what they can do, but until they get out here and put it together, you see glimpses, but you really don’t know,” Greyhounds head coach Noble Coley said.

But that does not mean there is much time for Jones County to relax as it gets ready for Coley’s first year at the helm. Plans were to begin this week with players slotted for varsity, JV or freshman rosters with only a few days before seeing outside competition with Friday’s home scrimmage against Putnam County.

“There is a sense of urgency because there are so many little things you can talk about,” Coley said. “It’s impossible to cover all of them, but at the end of the day, baseball is baseball.”

Jones County will then open the season Feb. 10 at Howard before a handful of games Feb. 14-15 in the Georgia Dugout Club Tournament at Lakepoint Sports prior to playing at Luella Feb. 19 and hosting Howard on Feb. 24.

By the time that early throng of games comes and goes, Coley figures that he should learn a lot about his team, both on and off the field.

“We’ve got these guys out here; they can do the physical stuff. But the mental stuff is what we’ve been hammering since we first got started,” Coley said. “We wanted to see if they would fold. I need to see what it’ll take to break you and what won’t.”
