The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department March 6-10, 2025.
March 6
Giving false name
Deputy Brown was sitting in the area of S.R. 49 facing the highway when he observed a vehicle pass by with a left side taillight that was not operable. Brown pulled out behind the vehicle and waited for a safe place to conduct a traffic stop.
Once the stop on the vehicle was made, the deputy approached and asked the male driver for his license and proof of insurance. Brown had dispatch run the license and asked the male passenger in the vehicle if he had his ID on him. The male passenger advised Brown that he did not have his wallet on him. At that time, Brown called for another unit to assist him with the stop. The driver’s information came back as valid and no warrants on the driver and he showed the deputy proof of insurance. Brown issued the driver a warning for the taillight being out.
Once Sgt. Walker arrived on scene, he went to the male passenger, got his name and date of birth and ran his information. The picture that came back looked nothing like the male passenger. The two males went inside a nearby local business to get coffee and Sgt. Walker drove up to the front door of the business. When the male passenger walked out of the business Sgt. Walker started talking to him. That gave Deputy Brown a chance to get in place. Once Brown was out of his patrol car, he started approaching the male subject and Sgt. Walker asked the subject for his real name and date of birth.
The subject stated he “was sticking to the name he gave.” Sgt. Walker then showed the male passenger the picture that came back for the name and date of birth given and advised the subject to give them his real name and date of birth.
After a number of times trying to get the subject’s information, Sgt.
Walker advised Brown to place the male under arrest for giving false name and date of birth. The male passenger was handcuffed and placed in Brown’s patrol car. Once inside the patrol car, the male gave his correct name and date of birth.
Brown called the information into dispatch, and it came back to show the male passenger had a warrant out of Spalding County for violation of probation. It was confirmed that Spalding County wanted to place a hold on the male subject, and he was then transported to the Jones County LEC where he received a citation for giving false name and date of birth, then turned over to jail staff.
March 9
Gun shots fired
Corp. Sullivan was dispatched to a residence in reference to gun shots fired. Once at the location, Sullivan made contact with the male complainant. The complainant advised that his neighbors were drunk and around midnight they stepped outside their residence and fired three shots from a gun.
The complainant stated that he confronted the males, and they had an argument. When Sullivan walked up to the residence in question, he observed there were a lot of beer bottles on the front porch and in the yard. He also found a wallet by the door. Sullivan walked up to the front door and knocked. He could hear what sounded like several people running around in the residence, however, no one would come to the door. Sullivan opened the wallet he found and noticed there was a cash app card with a name on it. Finally, a male answered the door and Sullivan asked for his name. When Sullivan asked the male for his date of birth, the subject wrote it on the corporal’s notepad. Sullivan had dispatch run the male’s information and it showed a couple of warrants from Gwinnett County. The male then turned and started to walk back in the residence and Sullivan followed him in. When they reached the dining room area, Sullivan placed the male in handcuffs and then noticed another male in the kitchen standing in the dark with a beer in his hand. The first male subject was placed in Sullivan’s patrol vehicle at that time. The corporal then went back inside the residence where the other two male occupants were and located them in an upstairs bedroom. Sullivan asked the two subjects for their names, and they refused to answer. Deputy Sullivan arrived on scene to assist. Not knowing if they could understand the officers, Deputy Sullivan tried to use the Google Translate app on his cell phone, however, the two male subjects still refused to answer. At that time, both subjects were placed in handcuffs and placed in the patrol vehicle as well. Deputy Patterson arrived on scene and transported one of the male subjects to the Jones County LEC while Corp. Sullivan transported the other two male subjects. Once at the jail, the staff was not able to get much information out of the two subjects even after giving the entire booking process in Spanish. Corp. Sullivan advised staff the two subjects were being charged with misdemeanor obstruction.
Later, Sgt. Baker advised Corp.
Sullivan that the first male subject was waiting on Gwinnett County to pick him up. The other two male subjects had identified themselves.
Sgt. Baker advised Sullivan that ICE agents stated that they may want to interview the two male subjects.
Baker ran their information in the system finally and it showed that one subject would face deportation and the other subject was indeed here illegally.
March 10
Man asleep in trunk of car
Deputy Shurley was on routine patrol in the area of GA Hwy. 57 when he received an alert from one of the agencies Flock Cameras showing a vehicle with suspended registration. Shurley checked the vehicle information via the GCIC system, and not only did it confirm the suspended registration, but it also alerted the vehicle had no valid insurance. The vehicle then passed by the deputy headed eastbound towards Twiggs County, so Shurley turned around to catch up to the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.
Shurley made contact with the female driver and verified she was the registered owner of the vehicle.
The female driver advised the deputy that she was not aware of the insurance and registration because her grandfather pays the insurance.
Shurley also advised the driver that her license had been suspended for failure to appear. At that time, the female was placed under arrest.
Shurley requested the next available wrecker to respond to pick up the vehicle. The female then informs the deputy that she had someone riding with her and that he was in the trunk of the vehicle. Deputy Elrod had arrived on scene to assist Shurley.
Elrod went to the vehicle, opened the trunk from inside the car and located a dirty white male subject curled up sleeping in the trunk. The male was asked to get out of the trunk and immediately detained and cleared of any contraband. The male subject gave the officers his name and advised the officers that he was originally from New Jersey.
Elrod ran the subject’s information, and it came back to show the male had a warrant for his arrest out of Twiggs County, as well as Henry County. Both the female driver and male trunk passenger were placed in Shurley’s patrol car and went to a nearby location to wait for Twiggs County to meet them to pick up the male subject on his warrant. The female was transported to the Jones County LEC where she was issued citations for driving while license suspended, no proof of insurance, and suspended registration. The female was then turned over to jail staff.
