Crown the Hounds: girls tennis claims region title

TENNIS HOUNDS

After finishing the regular season atop the region, the Lady Greyhounds finished the job in last week’s region tournament in McDonough, raising the trophy as region champions for the first time in more than 10 years.

With the win, Jones County will enter the upcoming GHSA state tournament as a No. 1 seed from Region 2-AAAA and have home-court advantage in at least the first round.

After wins of 4-1 against Stockbridge and 3-1 over Ola, Jones County matched up against Union Grove in the tournament’s girls’ first-place match. After a 7-6 win at No. 1 singles by Lyndsie Hanner on a 10-8 tiebreaker and Mallory Herndon’s 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, a doubles victory by Genna Maki and Maci Milholen by scores of 6-4 and 6-2 ended up clinching the region crown.

The win against Union Grove followed up the two early wins. In a 4-1 triumph over Stockbridge, Chloe Scarborough won 6-1 as well as on a 10-3 tiebreaker.

Herndon won 6-0, 6-0 with 6-0 doubles wins from Milholen and Maki as well as Emily Parks and Naliah Richardson.

Against Ola, a 3-1 win advanced the Lady Hounds to the finals. Scarborough won 6-1, 6-1 in singles with Parks and Richardson winning 6-4, 6-1 in doubles play in addition to a 6-1, 6-1 win by Milholen and Maki.
