Humphries bringing continuity on new-look coaching staff

GREYHOUND FOOTBALL

For the most part, the Greyhounds staff of football coaching is new as spring practice is now underway.

There are a few outliers, and one of them is Alexus Humphries, who along with tight ends coach David Denson are the two holdovers from the previous coaching staff.

So, with a group of coaches new to being on staff at JCHS for the most part, Humphries is helping with the transition himself.

“It’s important to help with the transition,” Humphries said. “I want to show how great of place this is, how great this community is and how special this program is.”

This isn’t Humphries’ first stint with Montgomery. He, Denson and director of football operations Adam Gillhouse previously coached together under Barney Hester at Howard High School in Macon. That past experience, Humphries said, made the decision to join Montgomery’s staff an easy one.

“Once I discovered that Coach Montgomery was the guy to get the job, it was a no brainer,” Humphries said. “He’s a tremendous guy and better man of faith. He has obviously coached under some very successful coaches in the past and see reason for it to be different for him here at Jones County.”

For all that’s different on the Greyhounds coaching staff, Humphries does bring a degree of continuity in returning to coach the defensive line where he points to Jacob Skinner as a leader.

“The thing for all these guys is that they come ready to work. They are being asked to do new things and in new roles,” Humphries said. “Even a guy like Skinner, he’s one with experience to lead these guys. When we are player-led, it takes us to new heights.”
