The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department May 2-8, 2025.
May 3
Aggressive driving complaint
A male subject came into the Sheriff’s Office with a complaint of an aggressive driver he had witnessed. The male complainant advised he was traveling on Cumslo Road from Hwy. 49 headed towards Gray to take his wife to a meeting. Just before the sharp curve at Skinner Road, a car began tailgating them and passed them in the curve in a no passing zone. A short time later, a truck began tailgating him. The complainant stated he put his blinker on, slowed down and pulled onto the shoulder of the road so the truck could pass them. The complainant said they got a little farther up the road and he noticed the driver of the truck come to a sudden stop in the road as if he was waiting on them to catch up with the truck. The complainant advised Sgt. Humphries that he had no intent on stopping and just went around the truck and continued on his way. The driver of the truck caught up to them, passed by the complainant at a high rate of speed, swerved in front of the complainant’s vehicle and slammed on the brakes trying to cause the complainant to rear end the truck. The complainant advised that he had to slam on brakes so hard, he thought the brakes were failing. The male complainant advised that he narrowly missed colliding with the truck. The driver of the truck then continued on and turned on Morton Road from Cumslo Road. Humphries noticed that the male complainant was still visibly shaking from the encounter at the time he arrived at the Sheriff’s Office. The complainant was not able to get a tag number off the truck, however, he had a detailed description of the vehicle to the Sheriff’s Office staff.
May 6
Driving without insurance
Sgt. Walker conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle after discovering that through a check of the license plate, the vehicle did not have insurance.
Walker approached the vehicle and made contact with the male driver/owner of the vehicle. The male confirmed with Walker that he did not have insurance on the vehicle. At that time, Walker arrested the male driver for driving without insurance and then transported the subject to the Jones County LEC.
May 7
DUI refusal/not “much” to drink
Deputy Elliot was advised by the Gray Police Department that they had been flagged down by someone regarding a truck in a ditch along GA Hwy. 22. Elliot went to the area and located the vehicle nose down in a ditch and unable to move in the 500 block of GA Hwy. 22. The deputy also noticed a male subject and approached him. Elliot asked the male if he was driving the vehicle and what happened. The male subject advised he was driving the vehicle and was attempting a U-turn on GA Hwy. 22. During the conversation with the male subject, Elliot immediately smelled a strong odor of intoxicants on the male’s breath. The deputy also noticed the male subject had bloodshot and watery eyes, and very slurred speech when he was explaining what happened. Elliot also observed the male swaying as he was speaking. The deputy asked the male for his driver’s license.
The male subject went from the passenger’s side of the vehicle to the driver’s side of the vehicle looking for his license. While doing so, the deputy observed the male using the vehicle for support as he walked around it.
The male subject finally looked in the passenger compartment for his license but did not find it. After searching the vehicle, the male finally found his driver’s license in his pants pocket.
When the male subject handed his license to the deputy, Elliot observed the male slowly lean/ fall into his vehicle and used the steering wheel to prevent further falling. Elliot asked the male subject how much he had to drink, and the male told the deputy “not much” several times. The deputy then asked the male if he was willing to perform a Standardized Field Sobriety Test and the male refused. Due to apparent intoxication, Elliot placed the male subject under arrest, read him the Georgia Implied Consent Notice and placed him in the rear of his patrol vehicle then transported him to the Jones County LEC.
The male was issued two citations for DUI; unsafe and DUI refusal.
