Perry surges to finish within state’s top 20

Whether getting there as a team or individual, qualifying for each year’s GHSA state golf championships is an accomplishment in of itself.

Any other success past that is icing on the cake.

Jones County sophomore boys golfer Cooper Perry came away with a version of that success in last week’s GHSA Class 4A boys state tournament, finishing 17th overall after firing a one-under-par round of 71 on the final day, a round that was better than the tourney’s overall winner.

“It was so good to watch him get out there and compete,” Greyhounds head golf coach Lance Pittman said. “It was just huge for him to go up there and play that well. He goes up there and shoots a 77 in the practice round. He went threeover in the first three holes but settled in and just competed. He just had a calm about him and went about his business.”

But there was more to Perry’s round than where he finished. According to Pittman, Perry’s overall two-day score of 145 would have been good for second place in one classification and in the top ten in 6A.

“It just so happened that all of the best golfers were in 4A,” Pittman said.
