The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheri’s Department and Gray Police Department June 5-11, 2025.
June 5
Stolen mail
Lt. Ransom received information reported by a complainant that his mail had been stolen. The complainant advised Ransom that he had purchased a five-ounce silver round from Ebay and it was shipped through the postal service to his home address. The complainant stated that he had a message from the seller of the silver that the package had been received and signed for. The message gave the initials of an individual that signed for the package and the time the package arrived. The complainant advised Ransom that when he arrived home, he found the package in his mailbox, but the bag had been cut and the silver round had been removed. The complainant also stated that none of his neighbors knew that he collected coins and silver, so he did not suspect any of his neighbors committed the theft.
The complainant also advised that he had a doorbell camera, however, it did not capture the delivery of the mail. At this time, there are no suspects and the complainant advised he was going to follow up with the postal inspector.
June 8
Suspended license, warrant for Larceny
Deputy Sullivan was monitoring traffic on Hwy. 49 when he observed a vehicle with no taillights. The deputy got behind the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop using his emergency lights. Sullivan made contact with the female driver and advised her the reason for the stop. The deputy asked the female driver for her driver’s license and relayed the information to dispatch.
Dispatch advised the deputy that the female’s license was suspended due to a super speeder citation and that she also had a warrant for larceny out of Columbia County. At that time, Sullivan had the female driver exit the vehicle and placed her in handcuffs. The deputy transported the female to the Jones County LEC where she was issued citations for taillights required and suspended license. The female was then turned over to jail staff.
June 11
Just a couple of beers
Lt. Carr was on routine patrol when he received a BOLO from dispatch over the radio for a reckless driver. Dispatch advised the vehicle was speeding and also driving on the wrong side of the road. The caller advised dispatch that as the vehicle was approaching Hwy. 49 and Hwy. 18 intersection, the vehicle ran the red light and continued south towards Macon.
Carr proceeded north on Hwy.
49 in an attempt to intercept the vehicle. As Carr was approaching Garrison Road, he spotted the vehicle matching the description given on the BOLO traveling south bound. Carr also noticed that the vehicle in question was following the vehicle in front of them too close.
At that time, Carr turned around to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle.
As the vehicle and Carr came up on Chapman Road, Carr activated his blue lights and siren in attempt to stop the vehicle. The vehicle did not stop and continued south bound.
Carr hit the siren audible tone again in attempt to get the driver’s attention. The lieutenant noticed that the driver failed to maintain his lane of travel and the passenger side tires left the roadway. The driver of the vehicle then slowed down and finally came to a stop on Hwy. 49.
Carr approached the vehicle and made contact with the male driver, and also advised the reason for the stop. The male driver identified himself and explained to Carr that he was headed to his business in Macon after he left his business in Baldwin County. While speaking to the male driver, Carr observed a small cooler on the back seat floorboard. Carr also detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the male’s person.
Carr then requested for Sgt. Walker to be en route to his location. As Carr continued speaking to the male driver, he noticed that the subject’s words were very slurred and had red glassy eyes and sweat forming on his forehead. The lieutenant asked the male driver if he had any alcoholic beverages, and the male stated he had “just a couple of beers” and nothing else. Sgt. Walker arrived on scene to perform a field sobriety test on the male. The male driver was asked to exit the vehicle and cleared of any weapons. As the male walked back towards his vehicle for the test, Carr noticed that he could not maintain his balance and struggled with commands given to him by Sgt. Walker. Sgt. Walker finished the field sobriety test and advised the male subject he was indeed driving under the influence.
The male driver was secured in handcuffs and read the Georgia Implied Consent and consented to a blood draw. Sgt. Walker transported the male subject to the Jones County LEC. Carr remained at the location for the next available wrecker and conducted a vehicle inventory search. Inside the vehicle, Carr found a cooler with cold beer and sitting next to the cooler was an open beer can. Carr returned to the Jones County LEC and issued citations for driving while unlicensed, failure to maintain lane, following too closely, suspended registration, open container and DUI. The male subject signed his citations and was turned over to jail staff for booking.
